UK law firm DLA announced on Monday that it will merge with US firm, Piper Rudnick to create the world's third largest law firm.
The announcement comes just two months after Piper Rudnick announced that it would merge with Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich LLP.
With the newly announced merger the combined organisation will be known as DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary and will be the only legal provider in the world with more than 1,000 lawyers on both sides of the Atlantic.
Speaking following the announcement of the planned joint venture, Piper Rudnick's co-chair, Francis Burch explained that:
"While the size of this combination is certain to capture attention, this merger represents the culmination of the strategic plan that was put into motion in 1999 when Piper & Marbury merged with Rudnick & Wolfe." He went on to add that: "More important than size is delivering a platform that will accommodate the expanding global needs of our clients."
Both mergers become effective on January 1, 2005.
