Ghanaian Finance Minister Takes Hard Line On Tax Evasion

by Robert Lee, Tax-News.com, London

05 October 2001

Speaking at the inauguration of the new board of directors for Ghana Reinsurance Company Limited (GhanRe), the Ghanaian Finance Minister, Mr Yaw Osafo Maafo, announced that henceforth, the government would be taking a hard line on both individual and corporate tax evasion.

The Minister promised that in future, the criteria for the issuance of government contracts would include timely and efficient payment of tax obligations, and that no individual or company which had not fulfilled these obligations would be considered. He observed that the move was long overdue, as the issue of tax payment is a growing problem, and one which has not played a large part in awarding government contracts up to now.

Mr Osafo Maafo said that these measures would take immediate effect, and that he would take responsibility for their implementation: 'I am adding this to my work,' he stated.
