Germany: BDI President Seeks Clarification On Government's Tax Policy

by Ulrika Lomas, Tax-News.com, Brussels

06 January 2010

President of the Federation of German Industries (BDI) Hans-Peter Keitel has urged the government to clarify its tax policy.

The BDI President has emphasized the need for the coalition to provide a clear, targeted tax policy, and to create clear framework conditions for the country’s economy. Reliable announcements are also imperative, Keitel added.

According to Keitel, the government must clarify whether or not it intends to consolidate the budget, and indeed whether or not it aims to undertake a structural reform of the country’s taxation in order to simplify the existing tax system, or whether it plans instead to continue making piecemeal changes to individual tax rates.

Keitel has highlighted the growing need to consolidate the public finances, and has warned that by simply making cosmetic alterations, the state will not be able to sucessfully fulfil the requirements of the debt brake rule up until 2016.
