Germany Signs Double Taxation Agreement With Ghana

11 August 2003

Germany has signed a treaty for the avoidance of double taxation with Ghana, making the latter the 8th country in sub-Saharan Africa to enter into such an agreement with the European nation.

According to reports in the regional media, the agreement was signed on Germany's behalf by ambassador, Peter Linderon, who explained on Wednesday that:

'Citizens normally believe that all the Ministries of Finance are only interested in the increase of taxes. Today our two delegations should sacrifice some of this attitude. In mutually avoiding double taxation both sides will benefit by facilitating better conditions for free enterprise, free trade and free market economy.'

According to the German ambassador, the aims of the recently signed agreement are to promote the exchange of goods and services, and the movement of capital and persons, by removing the possibility of double taxation, to clamp down on international tax evasion, and to promote cooperation between the tax authorities in the two countries by facilitating information exchange.
