Germany's ruling coalition has reached agreement on a new law which would impose substantial fines on those who send unsolicited commercial e-mails, it emerged last week.
Under the proposed legislation, which will have its second reading in the lower house in mid-March, spammers will face fines of up to EUR50,000, and will be prevented from disguising the origin or nature of their e-mails.
Speaking to Reuters on behalf of the Green Party, which is the junior partner in the coalition, research associate Daniel Holstein explained that:
"Spam e-mail is a big problem. It causes economic problems and costs people a lot of time. We hope that (the new legislation) will make people think twice about sending spam."
