The newly re-elected German government is looking to plug holes in its 2002-03 budget by introducing a package of tax increases, according to reports in the German media last week.
Handelsblatt suggested that boosting the size of a planned tobacco tax increase from 1 cent per cigarette to 6 cents at the start of next year is at the top of Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's 'revenue improvements' list, although an increase in the level of VAT is also said to be on the cards.
The German newspaper also reported that the introduction of an aircraft fuel tax, the reactivation of property tax, increases in death duties, and the removal of existing concessions are all under consideration, although it did not cite a source for this information.
