Nevada State Senator Joe has claimed that casinos could use the September 11 terrorist attacks as an 'escape clause' to avoid paying a tax increase which is up for consideration in the 2003 session of the Legislature and he has urged a legislative advisory panel on taxes to reassess the amount the gaming industry pays in taxes to local and federal governments.
'I certainly hope that this year we make it clear that as far as studying taxes, that we don't have any sacred cows that we leave out,' said Neal who is also a member of the Legislative Committee for Local Government Taxes and Finance.
Neal has tried many times to increase Nevada's gaming tax from its current 6.25 per cent rate, 'this committee and the advisory committee should look at all of the taxes that go to provide services for this state,' he has said.
A member of the advisory committee and former Clark County Finance Director, Guy Hobbs, responded to Neal's comments by pointing to an analysis conducted in the two weeks after the attacks which showed a loss in revenue of $240 million in Southern Nevada.
Neal, a well-known and long-time supporter of raising gaming taxes in America, said: 'I'm getting tired of getting beat up by the gaming industry every time I present something.'
