GFIP 2009 Addresses Need For Greater Intellectual Property Protection

by Mary Swire, Tax-News.com, Hong Kong

09 January 2009

The Global Forum on Intellectual Property 2009 has been held in Singapore, with the need for greater intellectual property protection the main topic on the agenda.

The bi-annual forum, which was held in Singapore on January 8 and 9, was centred around the theme of "the Evolving IP Ecosystem: Conflicts or Consensus," and was attended by over 400 of the world’s most influential IP figures who had traveled from the United States, Europe, Japan, South Korea, China, India, Australia and Southeast Asia to hear speeches from 90 different IP specialists.

GFIP 2009 focused on several areas relevant to the world of IP, including, among others, brand, copyright, inventions and business secrets.

The international speakers and panelists then considered and discussed critical issues and developments in the complex and dynamic global IP Ecosystem, with the aim of raising the bar on IP knowledge and standards, both regionally and globally.

Discussion topics covered at the forum centered around the role of IP within business and marketing, although this particular GFIP meeting was specifically designed to try to give greater clarity to the ways in which IP can be managed as a separate entity from law and marketing organizations.

The two-day forum was organized by the Intellectual Property Academy of Singapore.
