Chamber of Commerce chiefs from the six Gulf Cooperation Council nations met at the weekend to discuss how best to increase dialogue with the European Union and push for a long-awaited free trade agreement with the European bloc.
According to a Gulf News Online report on Monday, CoC heads from the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Oman agreed upon various strategies, including intensified visits by GCC delegates to Europe and the creation of a programme for continuous dialogue.
The GCC delegates also announced that they would be asking their governments to utilise the World Trade Organisation's influence to put pressure on the EU to lift customs barriers on exports from the Gulf region, and to sign the free trade agreement which has been under discussion for a decade and a half.
The Gulf News Online report went on to reveal that:
'Officials at the Riyadh-based GCC Secretariat have said a free trade accord with the EU could be signed within a few months following the enforcement of the landmark GCC Customs Union on January 1, a key demand by the EU for that accord.'
