French President Nicolas Sarkozy has once again confirmed his intention to fight for the introduction of a carbon tax at the borders of the European Union, in a determined bid to redress the balance as regards competition.
Unwavering in his aim to impose a carbon contribution in France, President Sarkozy emphasized the need to change behavior, and to encourage the consumption of environmentally friendly products.
It is vital that France acts as a role model, he continued. Indeed, according to Sarkozy, this is the last generation able to do something to save the planet from global warming. To wait for others before taking action, would be to risk the health of individuals, he stressed.
Equally determined, however, to preserve the competitiveness of industry in France, Sarkozy explained that he does not intend to impose a carbon contribution on industry in France, and then import products from countries that do nothing to protect the environment. Without a carbon tax at the borders of Europe, it would be profoundly unjust, he explained.
