The French government has approved a tax credit for 45 in-development games, with an estimated value of EUR40m. 120 projects underwent evaluation, but only those that passed quality, originality and cultural diversity criteria were included.
Guillaume de Foundaumiere, President of French trade body SNJV said: “Right from the start, the DG Competition wanted to impose a very strict cultural frame for games to be eligible for such an incentive. After almost two years of discussions, we have managed to obtain a number of concessions which will enable a significant number of projects to benefit from this tax credit.”
After discussions with the European Commission France has been allowed to offer game developers tax credits on the basis that, in effect, some genres of games are equally artistic as films, and should qualify for the same tax concessions as are applied to the film industry.
EU regulators have warned that the incentive should not be applied broadly across France’s video game industry, so as not to create an unfair advantage for those domiciled in France over their European counterparts. The ruling opens up the opportunity for other member states to argue for similar concessions.
