French government budget minister Eric Woerth has this week announced the tax rates which will be levied on the gambling industry. The opening up of the industry to private sector competition is in response to infringement proceedings initiated by the European Commission.
The new bill, which will be submitted to cabinet for approval in April, will allow online operators, including non-resident companies, to take bets from French residents on sport and poker. Lotteries and slot machines will remain under state control.
Revealing the plans, Mr Woerth announced that a levy of 7.5% would be placed on all horse-racing and sport bets, while online poker would be taxed at 2%.
Providing the legislation is approved by parliament the law will come into force on January 1, 2010.
