As the amended version of the European Union's Services Directive progresses through the European Parliament, the French and German authorities have unveiled plans to create an alternative version of the controversial legislation.
Speaking following a meeting with German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in Paris on Tuesday, French President Jacques Chirac explained that the directive "no longer exists" in its disputed format, and revealed that "concrete and positive" alternative proposals had been discussed with the German government.
President Chirac reportedly announced that the proposals would not contain the 'county of origin' principle which so angered French and German politicians. However, he declined to give a publication date for the alternative plan.
