Fradkov Says Russian Tax Reform Can No Longer Be Delayed

The Russian Prime Minister elect, Mikhail Fradkov, has identified tax reform as one of his highest priorities when he assumes office.

Although President Putin’s surprise nominee did not divulge the details of his intentions, he revealed in statements following meetings with leaders of the State Duma that tax reform was an issue which could no longer be ignored.

Fradkov also announced that he intends to streamline Russia’s governmental bureaucracy. He will reportedly start at the top, by cutting the number of deputy prime ministers to one or two positions instead of six, and reducing the number of government ministers from 24 to around 15.

He also announced that when he assumes office, the pro-reformist deputy speaker in the Duma, Alexander Zhukhov, will be elevated to first deputy prime minister, in a move likely to be welcomed by the business and financial community.
