Sam Currin, the former head of the North Carolina Republican Party and an ex state Superior Court judge, has been arrested and charged with using offshore companies set up in the Caribbean to evade United States federal taxes.
Currin, now a private criminal defense attorney, has been indicted on tax fraud and also charged with obstruction of justice, witness tampering and perjury charges in relation to a grand jury investigation of securities fraud.
Currin, 57, was one of four arrested as a result of an Internal Revenue Service investigation. The other suspects include tax attorney Ricky Graves, and a North Carolina couple, Howell Way Woltz and his wife Vernice, who reportedly headed offshore financial companies.
According to the indictment, all four have been accused of abusing offshore financial trusts based in the Caribbean to "deceive the IRS" and help "wealthy US citizens...evade federal income taxation."
Currin was chairman of the North Caroline state GOP from 1996 to 1999 and a Superior Court judge until 1990.
He faces up to 60 years in jail if convicted on all charges.
