Speaking to the Royal Gazette recently, former governor of Bermuda, Lord Waddington, expressed the belief that the issue of the island's independence from the United Kingdom is dead in the water, at least for the foreseeable future.
"I know that the PLP (Progressive Labour Party) in the past have said that if the question of independence were to be raised, it should be raised in a General Election campaign," Lord Waddington, who served as Bermuda's Governor from 1992 to 1997 and was Home Secreatary in Margaret Thatcher's government in the 1980's, announced.
"A party would then win or lose that election with an independence mandate," he told the Gazette, continuing: "But, as far as I know, that issue was not raised ahead of this election meaning that independence should be a non-issue for the next four or five years."
