It emerged late last week that California's governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed into law a bill designed to remove an obstacle to foreign lawyers practising in the state without being resident there.
A statute enforced by the State Bar last year which required all applicants for bar licenses to provide their Social Security number had the unintended effect of preventing overseas lawyers from practising in California, or from taking the state bar exam whilst resident in their home country.
Under the new bill, AB 664, applicants for state bar licenses will be permitted to provide a federal tax identification number or another "appropriate" form of identification instead of a Social Security number, if necessary.
