A strongly divided U.S. Advisory Commission on Electronic Commerce
(ACEC) starts its final public meeting in Dallas today and will
attempt to find some common ground on the vexing and divisive
internet tax question.
The Commission has a difficult task ahead of it in formulating
its recommendations to Congress and is under pressure from all
sides: E-commerce merchants want to keep the internet tax free
(at least for a few more years), bricks and mortar merchants are
crying foul that e-commerce merchants have an unfair advantage
and want the same taxes to apply to offline and online purchases,
and last, but by no means least, a large number of state governors
want to apply existing state mail order remote sales taxes (and
more) to e-commerce in order to preserve state revenues.
