FSA Plans Review Of Bond Market Regulation

by Robin Pilgrim, LawAndTax-News.com, London

04 October 2004

In addition to the planned review of the Financial Services Authority's stance on the sale of hedge funds to retail investors, it emerged last week that the UK's financial regulator will be reviewing its oversight of the country's bond market in anticipation of the implementation of several forthcoming European directives likely to affect the sector.

According to a report from the LMG news service, the body's new managing director of wholesale and institutional markets, Hector Sant is expected to focus on risk issues and conflicts in the bond markets, believing them to be less transparent than the equity market.

The report went on to reveal that discussions on the matter are planned for later this month, with representatives from banks, issuers, trade associations and law firms expected to be invited.

"The roundtable will look at areas including transparency in the secondary bond markets and whether changes can usefully be made," an FSA spokesman confirmed, adding that:

"Hector Sant is interested in looking more closely at bonds and this will be a frank discussion with industry figures to see if there are issues that need to be looked at."
