Pakistan’s Federal Bureau of Revenue (FBR) has been asked by the government to launch a wide tax investigation into the game of cricket, and its players, in the country.

While both the International Cricket Council and the police in London proceed with allegations that certain Pakistani cricketers who took part in the latest Test matches participated in a betting scam, the Pakistan Cricket Board has been ordered to produce details of the payments to and expenses of all of the players and officials involved with the national team during the past five years.

The FBR, on its part, has been asked by the government to launch an investigation, through its regional tax offices, into the accounts and assets of all of those Pakistani players and officials. The government has professed that, if irregularities are found between their declared income and standard of living, effective action will be taken.

The enquiries in Pakistan have been welcomed by most of those involved with the sport in the country as a way to clear the air and convince the players of the need to be careful.
