Irish Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy has placed a former Supreme Court judge at the head of a new panel charged with investigating the powers of the Revenue Commissioners.
Justice Francis Murphy will head up the new Revenue Powers Group which will also contain lawyers, tax experts and a member from within the Revenue service. The group's remit will involve observing the investigative measures used by the Commission in its pursuance of tax evaders, and then making recommendations to ministers on either augmenting or rationalising the Commission's powers.
Announcing the formation of the panel in February, McCreevy justified the move by explaining that there is a need for regular checks to be made on the system in order to reassure both the public and government offices that the Commission is performing efficiently.
