Even Hong Kong Movie Star Pleads For Tax Breaks

by Mary Swire, Tax-News.com, Hong Kong

09 November 2001

Hong Kong film star, Chow Yun Fat, took advantage of receiving an achievement award from Financial Secretary Antony Leung this week by asking him to make more tax cuts. 'I told Mr Leung that a lot of people are asking him to cut taxes,' said the Crouching Tiger, Sleeping Dragon star. But he refused to reveal Mr Leung's response.

Hong Kong is readying itself for financial hardship this year as a result of structural changes in the economy and the September 11 terrorist attacks in America. It is believed that the workforce of almost half of Hong Kong's major employers will freeze pay next year and one in four businesses are preparing to cut back jobs.
