Following a meeting held in Brussels last week, the European Regulators Group (ERG) has issued a statement expressing its intention to provide a level playing field for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) operators.
In order to create a regulatory environment which will foster the growth of internet telephony, the ERG revealed that it will be reviewing number allocation for such services in EU member states, arguing that "numbering plans should be technologically neutral".
The regulators also promised to address concerns expressed by VoIP providers regarding their obligations to provide free emergency calls and sometimes caller identification.
Operators of VoIP services have often argued that because they do not operate from a fixed location, it is technologically difficult to route emergency calls to the nearest network to the caller, or to provide information about them.
