European Regulators May Follow In SEC's Footsteps Over Hedge Fund Regulation

by Ulrika Lomas, for LawAndTax-News.com, Brussels

31 January 2005

Dutch MEP Ieke van den Burg has called upon the EC to consider a similar hedge fund registration scheme to that recently approved by the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

According to the Investment & Pensions Europe news service, the European Parliament's Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs will on Tuesday debate whether the EC should provide guidelines for hedge fund regulation.

IPE.com went on to note that Ms van den Burg revealed in her proposals that "the extraordinarily steep growth in the volumes of assets managed through hedge funds and other collective savings products outside the scope of the UCITS directive" is causing "major concerns" amongst MEPs.

Her proposal drew the attention of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee to the SEC initiative, and urged the EC "to put forward a proposal for EU-wide guidelines for the regulation of such funds".
