The European Parliament voted 502 to 11 with 19 abstentions on Wednesday supporting Ursula Stenzels (European Popular Party) resolution that takes the view that Malta is well on the way to meeting most of the political and economic criteria for membership.
In the debate Ms Stenzel did point out that the island had a tradition of protectionism towards its native industry backed-up by customs controls. Opening up these barriers, would cause uncertainty for certain small family firms.
The main problem with Malta, however, remains the attitude of the Opposition which is opposed to membership and the challenge therefore, was to mount a successful information campaign outlining the benefits of joining the EU to all sectors of society.
