Speaking to reporters last week, president of the European Parliament, Josep Borrell confirmed that MEPs will seek to water down the controversial Services Directive, in line with a compromise reached by European leaders.
Following strong objections to the 'country of origin' principle expressed by EU member states such as Germany and France, the EU stated last week that although it supports the liberalisation of the services market, the European Social Model must be protected.
Mr Borrell announced at a press conference that:
"I am convinced that our amendments will help to preserve the European social model."
Pledging a full parliamentary debate on the matter, he warned however that a final vote would not be possible before the May 29 referendum in France on the adoption of the EU constitution, an issue which has become entangled with the Services Directive there.
