Speaking at a summit meeting between European and American lawyers at the recent American Bar Association meeting, senior Law Society official, Alison Hook urged the European representatives and their fellow international lawyers in the UK to forcefully lobby for the right to practice in the United States.
"Practitioners who want these rights are going to have to become engaged in the debate. Courts in the US need evidence that there is interest from overseas lawyers," she explained.
Although, according to the Law Gazette, there is strong pressure from the New York Bar for unlimited practice rights in the EU, US states are reluctant to adopt an ABA model which would allow European lawyers to practice on an occasional or temporary basis in the United States.
Refusing to describe the situation as a stalemate, European lawyers attending the meeting reportedly concentrated instead on the signs that the debate is progressing, for example the attendance of many more state bars than previously at this year's summit.
