According to reports in the regional media last week, the EC's proposed red-tape cutting initiative does not go far enough for the European business community.
Although the official list of laws to be scrapped is not set to be published until tomorrow, the EU Observer, which obtained a copy of the list, revealed that around 70 pieces of legislation are likely to be shelved due to their negative effect on the EU's economy.
The European news service revealed that around half of the bills to be shelved are out of date laws relating to EU enlargement and discharged international obligations.
Speaking to the EU Observer, Hans-Werner Muller, secretary general of small business association, UEAPME argued that:
"This list of laws for withdrawal must not be regarded as a panacea for the better regulation agenda. For one thing it is fairly limited - most of the texts mentioned are anachronisms that would have been shelved anyway."
The second step in the regulatory 'cull' is set to take place next month, when Industry Commissioner, Gunter Verheugen is expected to present a list of European laws which need to be simplified.
