The European Parliament has this week begun debating the regulation of hedge funds and derivatives.
Speaking to the Institutional Investor news service, an unnamed EU official involved in the debate hinted that a 'fund passport', which would allow funds registered in one EU country to be sold in another, may be under discussion.
He also revealed that the European Parliament is likely to discuss whether there is a need for union-wide rules on the disclosure of hedge fund trading strategies when the vehicles are sold to retail investors, or whether less wealthy investors should only be permitted access to certain types of hedge funds.
