Estonia Agrees To Protect Olympic Symbol

by Ulrika Lomas, for LawAndTax-News.com, Brussels

12 June 2006

Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Dr Kamil Idris announced recently that the Government of the Republic of Estonia has acceded to the Nairobi Treaty on the Protection of the Olympic Symbol.

The Treaty will enter into force with respect to Estonia, on June 30, 2006.

Under the terms of the agreement, which was adopted in Nairobi in September 1981, all member states are under the obligation to protect the Olympic symbol — five interlaced rings — against use for commercial purposes (in advertisements, on goods, as a mark, etc.) without the authorization of the International Olympic Committee.

An important effect of the Treaty is that, if the International Olympic Committee grants authorization for the use of the Olympic symbol in a state party to the Treaty, the National Olympic Committee of that State is entitled to a share in any revenue the International Olympic Committee obtains for granting the said authorizations.
