The island of Nevis, part of the twin island federation of St Kitts and Nevis, has a new leader following the Nevis Reformation Party's (NRP) victory at the polls earlier this week.
The NRP won three of the five seats in the island's assembly, meaning that the party's leader, Joseph Parry, will replace former Nevisian leader, Vance Amory of the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM).
The CCM had been in power in Nevis for the past fourteen years and was the party most closely linked with seceding from neighbouring St Kitts. Nevis came close to seceding in a 1998 referendum, falling just short of the required two-thirds majority.
Chairman of the ruling St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, Dr. Timothy Harris, congratulated Mr Parry on his election victory: “Your personal victory in your constituency was always assured, but the valiant fight and successful outcomes by Messrs Robelto Hector and Hensley Daniel, made it possible for the NRP to form the Government."
“We wish you well as your Party assumes the mantle of leadership and begins to deliver on your mandate,” added the Labour Party chairman.
Members of the Nevis Assembly serve five year terms, although elections can be called after four years.
