Following in the footsteps of Hong Kong, which recently brought over 60 government services online through its Electronic Service Delivery (ESD) scheme, Ireland now aims to do the same via a new partnership between Eircom.net and Innovatia, a Canadian-based IP technology developer.
According to a report by the country's Information Society Commission, there are a number of services which the Irish public most want to see go online, including passport applications and driving licence renewals .
Aidan Finnegan, Director of Corporate Business at Eircom.net, said: 'The partnership between Eircom.net and Innovatia seeks to use technology to enable Government to provide a range of public services online. The benefit is that the public can access these services through a range of different services, including the touch-tone phone at home.'
He continued: 'The Internet continues to drive the demand for new and innovative ways for us to do business. We constantly look to identify and source the relevant technologies that will enable our customers to switch on to e-business and e-Government.'
Ireland has a large-scale e-commerce strategy and gettting government services and departments online is one of its key elements. The Irish Revenue - the Revenue Commissioners - already has an online tax return service.
