Many privately owned pharmacies in Egypt refused to open on February 16, and joined together in protest against the proposed enforcement of a tax law which will have a detrimental impact on their businesses.
The tax law, which was enacted in 2005, but never enforced, will require pharmacies to include all goods in the tax net - both medicines and other good such as toiletries.
Pharmacists argue that they should be exempt because they offer many non-profit making goods for the greater good of the community.
The union in charge of the demonstrations stated that they would continue the protests, but would ensure that important drugs were available for those in desperate need.
