European Union Enlargement Commissioner Gunter Verheugen has urged the Turkish government to help facilitate a settlement to the Cyprus problem before the island has travelled too far down the road of accession to the EU after May 2004.
The Commissioner made his comments at a press conference following a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul where he told reporters that there is still a chance that a settlement can be reached on the basis of the UN plan, rejected by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash earlier in the year.
However, from Turkey's viewpoint, Verheugen stressed the importance of initiating a settlement process sooner rather than later as the Cypriot division represents a major obstacle on the path of Turkey's membership to the European Union.
