According to reports, the European Commission is preparing to take legal action against 9 EU member states over their failure to introduce into national legislation stricter rules on electronic privacy.

Speaking to Reuters on Thursday, an unnamed source revealed that:

"The Commission is looking into sending letters to nine countries. This would be the first step of an infringement procedure."

The nine countries which missed the October 31 deadline for implementing the EU's e-privacy directive are: Belgium, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Ireland, Finland, and Luxembourg.

Denmark, Spain, Italy, Austraia, and Sweden have already put in place the new rules, which seek to increase the protection of personal data, and the United Kingdom is in the process of so doing.
