A detailed report about the process of Malta's entry into the
European Union is going to be discussed this week in the European
Parliament.
The report reviews the progress that has been achieved until now and recommends that Malta end negotiations by next year and thus be ready for entry during the first enlargement that takes place in the Union. The report lists the work that has to be done in a number of sectors namely, the environment and agricultural sectors and within the legislation of ships.
On Monday Parliament began the 8-sitting-long discussion of the
National Plan for the adoption of the Acquis Communautaire, the
EU body of legislation. Minister for Foreign Affairs, Joe Borg,
said that the report could be achieved even though he admitted
it is an ambitious one. He said that the Government has already
applied for the funds given before entry into the Union. Opposition
deputy-leader George Vella said that the Government has not mandate
to carry out this plan and added that the process is a fast one
when considering that entry into the Union cannot take place until
the year 2005.
