Despite the fact that its Directive on Privacy and Electronic Communications has yet to be implemented in nine EU member states, the European Commission is said to be considering the introduction of tougher anti-spam laws.
According to a policy paper on the matter seen by Reuters, the EC is calling for tougher penalties to be imposed on those who breach the anti-spam provisions of the directive.
"Member states and competent authorities should...create adequate possibilities for victims to claim damages and provide for real sanctions, including financial and criminal penalties where appropriate," the policy paper proposed, according to Reuters.
The policy document is set to be published next week, the news service revealed.
