EU May Impose Restrictions On Chinese Textile Imports

Speaking to reporters last week, the European Commission's chief spokesperson, Françoise Le Bail announced that the EC would not rule out the imposition of restrictions on Chinese textiles imports if they grow "without moderation".

Following the introduction on January 1 of free trade on textiles, concerns have been expressed that imports from China to Europe will increase at an undesirable pace.

"We are monitoring the situation," Mrs Le Bail explained, adding that: "As soon as we have enough data it will be decided if there is a need for further action."

This echoes remarks made by Trade Commission, Peter Mandelson during his visit to the Chinese mainland last month.

According to the EU Observer news service, Mr Mandelson announced in a speech that:

"If there is a perception of a lack of equilibrium in China's trading practice, a negative reaction will be inevitable."
