A European Union trade spokesperson has insisted that anti-dumping measures on imports of certain steel products from China are in the interests of upholding the principles of fair trade rather than protecting the European economy from cheap imports.
“The decision to impose measures was taken on the basis of clear evidence that unfair dumping of Chinese products has taken place with State distortion of raw material prices,” Lutz Güllner argued in a statement released on July 31.
The EU has felt compelled to justify its actions following the request by China for World Trade Organization (WTO) consultations on EU anti-dumping measures on imports of carbon steel fasteners originating from China.
In recent months, the EU has filed anti-dumping complaints against China over products ranging from footwear to steel fasteners. “This is harming the otherwise competitive EU industry, with potentially dire long term effects,” Güllner commented. However, he believes that such measures are “not about protectionism” but are “about fighting fair trade.”
“As a member of the World Trade Organisation, China has of course the right to bring its concerns to the WTO dispute settlement mechanism. We will now carefully study the claims contained in China´s request and will respond in due course,” he said.
“In all anti-dumping cases, the European Commission strictly follows the applicable EU rules which are in full compliance with the terms of the WTO Anti-Dumping Agreement. This is also the case for the measures on which China is now seeking consultations,” Güllner added.
