The European Union has told Gibraltar that it must open up its telecommunications market to competition and end the current monopoly by Nynex and Gibtel.
Despite fears about the competitiveness of the two companies (who have recently been the subject of merger speculation) the move to a fully liberalised telecoms market will be of great benefit to Gibraltar.
Apart from the obvious benefits to consumers, who can expect greater choice and cheaper rates once competitors to Gibtel and Nynex arrive, the opening up of the telecoms market should provide a boost to Gibraltar's ambitions to become an offshore e-commerce centre, as new telecoms operators will bring with them new and improved infrastructure required to attract major e-commerce players.
