Several key European Union pre-accession states have announced that they are preparing to implement the Rights of Establishment directive, a development which is likely to benefit UK law firms wishing to open operations in those countries.
According to reports, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Estonia, and Slovenia have all told the EC that the directive will be in place before they accede to the European bloc in 2004. The Rights of Establishment directive permits EU-based lawyers to practise throughout the Union under their home title, and protects them from unfair discrimination.
Speaking to the Legal Week news service last week, the UK Law Society's international policy executive for Europe, Mickel Laurans announced that:
'We welcome any progress towards improving the legal system in Eastern Europe. Many UK firms have been very interested in the region for a long time and it offers many opportunities. We will work with the firms to take full advantage of the directive.'
