It emerged this week that technology firm, E-Data has settled a patent dispute with UK-based OnDemand Distribution (OD2), Microsoft, and Tiscali over pay per song download services offered by the software firm and the internet service provider in conjunction with OD2.
The patent held by E-Data covers the downloading and recording of information such as music, films, or news content onto a tangible object such as paper or a CD.
Although details of the settlement were not available, E-Data announced that the agreement (which stipulates that OD2 will pay all past and future royalties for use of the technology to E-Data) will send an "important message to other companies infringing upon E-Data's intellectual property".
The firm is said to be in discussions with Apple Computer over whether the latter's iTunes Music Store also infringes on the E-Data technology.
