Despite the recent call by the Legal Affairs Committee of the European Parliament (JURI) for the debate on the controversial software patent directive to be restarted, the European Commission still hopes to push the legislation through in its current form, it emerged this week.
Speaking to the ZDNet news service on Friday, an unnamed EC spokeswoman argued that:
"The software patent directive is absolutely necessary. We're prepared to discuss things, but can't even get as far as discussing things if other institutions don't move things forward."
Although the EC is not obliged to restart the debate as requested by the European Parliamentary committee, it is likely to come under pressure to do so. However, the EC spokeswoman expressed the Commission's defiant position on the issue, observing that:
"It was only one committee. In order for the committee's opinion to be adopted by the parliament it has to be voted by plenary."
