Speaking to probate lawyers at a conference recently co-hosted by the UK's Law Society and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, the European Commission's director-general for freedom, security and justice, Oliver Tell pledged to keep any attempts to harmonise succession laws across the EU straightforward.
According to the Law Society's Law Gazette, which reported on the conference, Mr Tell explained to delegates that:
"Two principles will guide the actions of the commission - transparency and simplicity. We do not wish to legislate for the purpose of legislating, but only where it will improve citizens' lives."
Earlier this year, the EC published a Green Paper examining the difficulties presented by differing succession rules in EU member states when dealing with cross-border estates. Comment from interested parties is invited until September 30.
