It has been announced this week that the Dutch Senate has approved the passing of new legislation which will allow the country's government to tax the online gambling sector and its customers, rather than banning such sites altogether.
The new bill, in addition to taxing foreign online gaming operators, could also target the winnings of Dutch citizens using such websites.
Previously, the government had banned such services in order to protect monopoly provider Holland Casino, although earlier this year, a bid to allow it an exclusive license for the provision of online gaming in the country was rejected.
It remains to be seen whether, if the tax proposals are adopted, the government will step back from its stance of refusing to allow Dutch banks to deal with certain foreign providers of online gaming services.
