Dutch Government Planning Copyright Levy On MP3 Players

A new levy on the purchase of MP3 players, iPods and other hard disk players designed to compensate copyright holders for illegal music downloading is set to be imposed by the Dutch authorities in the near future.

The EUR3.28 per gigabyte tax, put forward by the Stichting Thuiskopie Foundation, would come on top of a surcharge on blank CDs and DVDs already imposed in the Netherlands at the organisation's behest.

Critics of the proposed levy have argued that those who obtain their music by legal means will be paying to access the copyrighted material twice over.

Speaking with regard to the planned tax, Dutch trade association, ICT Office argued this week that it is a dangerous move "because it could also drive IT companies to bypass Europe and launch their new products in the US and Asia first, something which could have a negative impact on the Dutch electronics sector".
