As Dublin continues to welcome tourists in their droves, so businesses are waking up to the attractions of this fashionable Irish city. WorldPort Communications, the Chicago-based web and wireless application protocol (WAP) service provider, has announced that it is to set up its European headquarters in the city as part of its drive to become the leading European provider of web-hosting services.

WorldPort has signed an agreement to rent a 61,000 sq. ft. facility for a so-called European SuperCentre in Dublin, which should be fully operational by September and which will serve as the flagship for WorldPort's Internet Solution Centres, to be strategically located in Western European cities.

David Hickey, General Manager of WorldPort Communications who is today due to outline the company's plans at Dublin's Conrad Hotel, said that Ireland had been selected based on a combination of factors - the country's skilled workforce, its telecommunications infrastructure and the national initiative to support technology-oriented business. Ireland was deemed to have one of the most advanced, competitive and reliable telecoms systems in Europe, following the country's multi-billion pound investment in telecoms infrastructure.

The Irish government has made much of its intention to become the most attractive location in Europe for e-commerce providers, . The Department of Public Enterprise has established industry partnerships in order to secure e-commerce investment, while the tax regime is highly favourable for incoming investors and operators alike. WorldPort's decision to locate in Dublin is a convincing piece of evidence that the policy is succeeding
