Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid al Maktoum, the Vice President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai has died at the age of 62, it emerged on Wednesday.
Sheikh Maktoum, who suffered from heart problems, was staying in Australia at the time.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, UAE Defence Minister and the late ruler's brother will assume leadership of Dubai, and a new vice president will be appointed in due course by the UAE's President, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan.
40 days of mourning have been declared in the UAE, and all ministries and government organisations will be closed for one week.
