Global logistics firm DHL has announced a new joint venture with the Dubai customs authorities that will see the creation of an electronic customs clearance system designed to streamline procedures and improve general business efficiency in the United Arab Emirates and beyond.
The e-clearance project, which is expected to become fully live in April, will result in the complete digitisation of all customs clearance procedures which, according to UAE Customs and Gateway Manager Derek Tully, will reduce shipment transit times by up to 24 hours.
“By implementing this new procedure, DHL UAE is helping Dubai increase its customs efficiency which will, as a direct knock on effect, increase productivity for regional businesses and customers,” observed Mr Tully, AME Info reported.
“Dubai Customs has been highly receptive to the concept as it highlights Dubai's growing initiative to be the region's leading logistics and business hub,” he added.
DHL is expecting the new initiaitve to act as a template for similar electronic customs clearance systems elswhere in the Middle East, with a region-wide system scheduled to be rolled out in GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) member states within the next eighteen months.
