Dubai is ready to host the Emerging Market Economy Forum (EMEF) on e-commerce, a key event for the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) later this month, according to OECD officials.
Michael Oborne, deputy director of science, technology and industry, OECD, recently met with the Dubai organising committee and said he felt sure the event, to be held at Dubai's Burj Al Arab hotel, would be a success.
"All the arrangements are well planned and I am confident that the event will be a great success," he said. "Dubai has a great deal to offer the delegates of the conference and it will be a great opportunity for them to experience this centre of IT excellence."
The Emerging Market Economy Forum is not only the first OECD event in the region, but also the first time in the organisation's 25-year history that such an event has been held in a non-member country.
"The OECD is massively influential in its work, and will play a significant role in the rapid growth of e-commerce in the Middle East and emerging countries," said Mohammed Al Gergawi, director general of Dubai Technology, E-commerce and Media Free Zone and Chairman, DIC (pictured).
The forum will address and formulate global policy on issues such as taxation, e-commerce legislation, fraud and security. It will be preceded by a one day Public Voice conference, where consumer groups and other non-government organisations will be able to present their views.
500 participants from the Governments of OECD-member nations, as well as representatives from 30 non-member economies and major global organisations, will attend the event, of which Microsoft is a key sponsor.
